The months leading up to this decision were some of the hardest I have ever had. Fear, sadness, anxiety, shock, and excitement were all bundled into a box and being vigorously shaken around. I feel very selfish saying that the first thought of being back with my family and friends again in America didn’t comfort me like I thought it would. Perhaps it was the way our decision to leave came up that shadowed that excitement, but now that I look back I realize it was a multitude of things. The situation was hard and if you care to hear that story well you can buy me a couple of beers and we can have a nice chat. LOL But honestly the only thing that seemed to cross my mind at the time of our decision was seeing my little students faces when I would leave and how those smiles that brightened even my most gloomiest days would no longer be a daily occurrence.
I am sure there will be many meaningful discussions in classrooms and community centers following the viewing which will result in better mental and physical outcomes. Back Home Again was inspired by real testimonials that Michael recorded of individuals who experienced the forest fire, evacuation and the road to recovery. Extensive health research was utilized in the creation of the film, script and content including research from the University of Alberta, CMHA and a number of other studies related to mental health and resilience in disaster/post disaster situations. P.T.’s promise chorus and the circus chorus are mingling together and breaking down in pure American hootenanny fashion when he suddenly realizes that he has to leave now and go find his family. Of course there are several self help books you could read, people you can talk to who have been through similar situations, even TV shows you could watch like Dr. Phil (is he still around?) to get advice. Sure all these sources are there to help people get through things in life, make them feel better; but there is no real answer other than you just do it! You keep moving forward because that is what we are here on Earth to do, just keep on moving forward. You wake up, take on another day and you just get through it. Some days are harder than others, but you live for the good days. A child who was going through some things we all do as kids, and now here I am a 32 year old reminding myself what I told my student and needing to take my own advice.

Back Home Again is a wonderful tool to support the mental wellness not just of people affected by ‘The Beast,’ but all those who’ve faced and will face tragic circumstances in their lifetime. "Back Home Again" topped the adult contemporary chart for two weeks. The single was the first of three number ones on the country music chart where it stayed for a single week. Having been involved with many of the disasters in Canada over the past two decades, seeing the devastation first hand, as well as the impact on evacuees – there is an undeniable need for this film.

It conveys the loss and recovery after a disaster in a compassionate and subtle way that works to alleviate the trauma and stress on children and families. Now more than ever, in the wake of what we have all endured through the COVID-19 pandemic, we need inspiring stories like this. We all need emotional and mental support and our goal in making this film is to empower one another to be mental helpers.
The central theme of how adversity can also bring about an opportunity to cultivate resilience was very obvious. As a physician for 30 years, I have certainly seen the effects of stress on the human body in both adults and children. This film provides an opportunity for educators to embrace this as a means to expand awareness.

I was moved by the empathy, humour and sensitivity of the writing. Telling this story through the lens of the animals is such a compelling way to engage and inspire young people who are struggling to cope with the trauma of experiencing natural disaster. I have no doubt that this will serve millions of children and families as an important part on their road to recovery. The film provides messages of hope, strength, resiliency, collaboration and unity in the face of adversity - all of which are important for those recovering from a disaster. We know from experience that recovery takes time, and the increased awareness and subsequent discussions created by Back Home Again will go a long way to build preparedness and resiliency in communities across Canada and beyond, now and in the future. The storyline of Back Home Again is easily transferable to any major stressor globally.
As the Watch Commander that day and still being able to call this home, I am proud of the response during and after this tragedy. The achievements of the Wood Buffalo RCMP members in partnership with the RMWB Bylaw and emergency service during the evacuation and return HOME will always be an emotional topic. Thank you for creating and sharing the experiences of those who contributed during your research. It is not a nuanced and accurate portrayal of the real man, but it is a wonderful tale full of meaning. In many ways and fashions, we wander away from our Father in heaven.
That love only continued to grow as I would also meet people in Japan who would leave a lasting impression on my heart forever. To love something so much and have to say goodbye is a very bittersweet thing to do. There is no real playbook to help you get through a major life change.

Each goodbye I will say over the next three months will hold a very special place in my heart. I will say some goodbyes for a short time in hopes to see those individuals again, and some goodbyes may be forever. After viewing the film, we are confident this animated documentary will build hope, resilience and community. It was an emotional journey watching Back Home Again.
He bolts out the door to catch the last train to Connecticut to find his family. Desperately reaches for the moving train, he repeats his promise and barely jumps aboard the caboose. When we as Christians sin, we are effectively leaving God. (Though he does not entirely leave us.) We are going astray as prodigal sons and daughters. Playing the prodigal to a T , I can’t help but notice that theme within this chorus. It also makes me think of a faithful husband who leaves every day to make a living for his family.
